Where do buyers’ real words come from?
Keyword tools show what people type, but not why they type it. In B2B the best starting point is your own sales conversations. Review anonymised enquiries, tender questions and the objections your team hears most often, and ask how buyers describe the problem before they know your solution exists.
A B2B purchase rarely has a single reader. A technical specialist wants to know whether the solution will work within their constraints, a procurement manager wants to see scope and responsibilities, and the business owner wants to understand which problem the project solves. All three may search for the same offer in quite different words. B2B SEO plans pages for each of them.
So for each group of queries, write down the buyer’s role, their stage in the purchase and the evidence they will need to move forward. That turns the research into a plan for pages, not a spreadsheet of terms that nobody opens again. The same buyer roles are useful for B2B YouTube marketing too.
Does the query need a service page or a guide?
Before you assign a page type, look at what currently ranks for the query in the target country. The results show what kind of answer people expect. A query about a specification may call for a technical guide, while a query that names a type of supplier usually calls for a commercial page.
Group variants that describe the same task into one cluster. Create separate pages when the offer, the buyer’s need or the evidence required changes in a meaningful way, for example when the same service is bought by different industries with different requirements.
Do not drop narrow queries just because the tools show little volume. In B2B, a precise query from the right company can be worth more than a broad one with an impressive estimate, and volume figures for small, specialised searches are rough at best.
What should the enquiry ask for?
A commercial page should help a buyer decide whether you are the right fit: who the service suits, what information you need to start, who is responsible for what and what the buyer receives at the end. Guides should link to that page at the point where a reader is ready to talk about implementation.
Decide together with your sales team what counts as a qualified enquiry, and record which page each enquiry came from wherever your setup allows it (marketing analytics sets this up). Without that, you can only report traffic, and traffic says little about whether the right companies are getting in touch.
Review the quality of enquiries alongside search demand at regular intervals. Content priorities should follow real business fit, including whether you have the capacity to deliver the work a page attracts.
B2B intent research record
A template to adapt to your own project.
| Buyer role | Question to investigate | Evidence needed |
|---|---|---|
| Technical specialist | Will it work within our constraints? | Specifications and verified capabilities. |
| Procurement | What is included and who is responsible? | Scope, requirements and delivery terms. |
| Business owner | Which problem does the project solve? | Workflow, acceptance criteria and measurement plan. |
Checklist: B2B keyword research
- Collect anonymised sales questions and group them by buyer role.
- Check target-market results and group queries that share a task.
- Give each cluster one page type: offer, guide or comparison.
- Define a qualified enquiry together with the sales team.
- Review enquiries and their landing pages with sales regularly.
Example: three pages for one supplier
A manufacturing supplier keeps three pages that work together: a commercial page for a specific assembly service, a guide to preparing technical drawings and a checklist for choosing a supplier. Each page serves a different decision, and they link to one another where a reader would naturally move on.
The enquiry form asks only for the information needed to judge whether the job is a fit, such as materials, quantities and drawings if they exist. It does not demand a detailed quotation request before the first conversation.
